Who Should Not Get Botox?Boston Medical Aesthetics

Important Medical Considerations You Should Know

Botox is a safe, effective, and widely used treatment when administered by trained medical professionals. However, like any medical procedure, Botox is not appropriate for everyone. At Boston Medical Aesthetics, patient safety is always our top priority, which is why every Botox treatment begins with a thorough medical consultation.

Below are important medical considerations to understand before receiving Botox.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Botox has not been extensively studied in pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. While there is no strong evidence showing harm, the lack of definitive safety data means Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. At Boston Medical Aesthetics, we advise waiting until after this period to resume treatment.

Certain Neuromuscular Disorders

Individuals with neuromuscular conditions may be at increased risk for complications from Botox. This includes conditions such as:

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Because Botox works by relaxing muscles, these conditions can increase sensitivity to its effects and may lead to unwanted weakness.

Active Infections or Skin Conditions at the Injection Site

Botox should not be injected into areas with:

  • Active skin infections
  • Open wounds
  • Rashes or inflammation

Treating over compromised skin can increase the risk of infection and affect results. Botox can be safely performed once the area has fully healed.

Known Allergy to Botulinum Toxin or Ingredients

While rare, individuals with a known allergy to botulinum toxin or any components of the formulation should not receive Botox. During your consultation, we review any prior reactions to Botox or similar neuromodulators.

Certain Medications and Medical Conditions

Some medications and medical conditions may require postponing treatment or additional evaluation, including:

  • Blood thinners or medications that increase bleeding or bruising
  • Certain antibiotics (such as aminoglycosides)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Neurological conditions not yet fully evaluated

This does not always mean Botox is unsafe, but it does mean your provider needs to carefully assess timing, dosing, and technique.

Unrealistic Expectations

Botox is designed to soften lines and relax targeted muscles. It will not completely stop aging or dramatically alter facial structure. Patients seeking drastic or immediate transformation may not be good candidates until expectations are aligned. At Boston Medical Aesthetics, we believe education and honest conversations are essential for beautiful, natural results.

When Botox May Be Delayed- Not Denied

In many cases Botox isn’t off the table forever, it may simply need to be delayed. Illness, recent surgery, skin irritation, or changes in medication can all affect treatment timing. A medical consultation allows us to determine the safest and most effective plan for you.

Our Commitment to Safe, Thoughtful Care

At Boston Medical Aesthetics, Botox is never a one-size-fits-all treatment. Our experienced medical providers take the time to review your medical history, listen to your concerns, and ensure Botox is appropriate for your individual needs.

If Botox isn’t right for you at the time of your consultation, we’ll guide you toward alternative options or recommend waiting until it is safe to proceed. Your health, safety, and confidence always come first.

If you’re considering Botox and have questions about whether it’s right for you, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our team. We’re here to help you make informed, confident decisions about your care.
